James became an institution on the British alternative music scene in the 1990s.
James formed in Manchester in 1982, when Paul Gilbertson (guitar),Jim Glennie (bass), and Gavan Whelan (drums) met Tim Booth (vocals) at Manchester University and asked him to join their fledgling band.
In 1990, the band signed and released Gold Mother in the autumn. Following a number of minor hit singles such as ‘Come Home’ and ‘How Was It For You’, Gold Mother finally became a breakthrough success in the spring of 1991, when a re-recorded version of ‘Sit Down’ — now boasting a contemporary baggy beat — climbed to number two on the U.K. charts and became a staple on U.S. modern rock radio.
The album 'Seven’ followed in 1992 bearing some classics of the James stable such as ‘Born Of Frustration’.
The next album 'Laid’ (1993) saw the beginning of a number of collaborations with Brian Eno who produced the album. The album was an alternative rock hit in the U.S. on the strength of the title track, which became a crossover hit and was famously used in the movie ‘American Pie’. During the Laid sessions, James recorded another album's worth of experimental music with Eno that was released in the autumn of 1994 as 'Wah Wah’.
In 1997, James released their 7th studio album in the form of ‘Whiplash’ which saw the band restored to commercial success with the single ‘She’s A Star’.
The band reformed in 2007 with the release of a Best Of retrospective and continue to perform to packed out venues.
Stand-out tracks from James include 'Sit Down', 'She's A Star' and 'Laid'.
